Retailers Still Mum on Sago Palm Plants
|
|
King Palm, Sago Palm, False Palm (cycas revoluta) are all one in the same. It is from the Cycad Family and is one of the oldest plants dating back to prehistoric times. This plant has had a lot of time to evolve to ward off predators. The plants as with any Cycad contain Cyanide, Carcinogens and Neurotoxins that pretty well ensure their survival from any animals biting into them. There are some animals that have evolved to be immune, but our domestic animals have not.
Sago Palms are one of the best selling ornamental plants in the world. They require very little maintenance, however, in order for them to thrive outdoors, they must be in tropical or subtropical zones. Much of the United States does not fall into those categories. Despite this fact, our markets are being flooded with these plants. Costco, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Home Depot and Lowe's sell a large amount of these plants. In recent years, the poisoning deaths of primarily dogs and cats have climbed along with the sales of these plants. Unsuspecting pet owners go and purchase these plants, bring them home and their pet dies a terrible death. Connecting the dots between the pet (symptomatic vomiting and lethargic behavior) and the plant is crucial for recovery. Oxygen and IVs to purge the poisons are absolutely necessary and it can be quite costly to save your pet. After 48 hours, without treatment, it is probably too late. The cyanide attaches to the pet's red blood cells and starves the pet of oxygen internally. Damage of the liver occurs and the pet will bleed out internally in some cases. It is a terrible death for the pet and terrible for a pet owner to witness.
There are so many plants dangerous to our pets, but this plant has fallen through the cracks. Experienced Cycad Plant handlers warn their own to wear gloves and face masks because of the poison possibilities. Some experts now believe the uptake of pollens (containing Cyanide, Carcinogens and Neurotoxins) through our noses could be absorbed into our brains. Some people may tout the plants are edible, however, some island tribes that depended on Cycads as food suffered from Parkinson and ALS like diseases as the result of eating them. So, does this sound like a plant you would want to buy and bring home to your family? So, Costco, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Home Depot and Lowe's, where are the consumer warnings for your valued customers? Lowe's even has a web site for professional landscapers warning them not to plant Sago Palm and other poisonous plants. So, where are the warnings for us?
There should be outrage, but there is not. Are our pets really expendable? We need to unite in cases like this one. Anyone who has inadvertently poisoned their pet is going through Hell. Well, the guilty mind will often find ways to heal itself and in my case, I have started a petition page urging retailers to label their dangerous plants and started a web page called http://www.petlifesupport.com. The idea of paying-it-forward for those pets in need is very attractive and will be very challenging. We must do more to save our pets, our neighbor's pets and those pets who have no one.

PLEASE SEND THIS OUT TO EVERYONE YOU HAVE EVER MET. SUPPORT H.B. 39.
It takes an Amish farmer less than 5 minutes to "debark" one of his breeding dogs by hammering a steel rod down her throat - and breaking her jaw and shattering her back teeth. It takes 5 minutes for that same farmer/.....................commercial breeder to cut off one of his dog's tail - in a filthy, dark barn without anesthesia. And it takes about the same amount of time for his thirteen year old son to tie the dog down and cut the puppies from her belly. Five minutes more to crop her ears using a pair of rusted hedge shears - the dog squirming and crying out in unbelievable pain.
So why is it taking Senator Stewart Greenleaf more than a week to decide that this is wrong? When we called his office last week to ask why his Committee is sitting on H.B. 39, we were told by his aide that Senator Greenleaf is "reviewing" the bill. What's to review? Everyone on Capital Hill knows about this bill. It is the companion bill to H.B. 2525 that passed into law last fall. When ask, repeatedly, if Senator Greenleaf would support H.B. 39, his aide would would commit. This is surprising to us considering Senator Greenleaf not only toured Pennsylvania' s puppy mills with a reporter from the Inquirer in 1995, seeing firsthand the conditions these animals face, but he also coined the expression "Puppy Mill Capital of the East Coast" and expressed an urgent need for change. Well, Senator Greenleaf, here's your chance to bring about change and help these dogs!
H.B. 39 would make it illegal for anyone other than a licensed veterinarian to perform these procedures, or if it is already illegal for anyone but a licensed vet to perform the procedure, it will toughen the penalties. Please contact the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and ask them to vote the bill out of their committee so it can finally go to the floor of the Senate for a vote. The bill passed the House unanimously, and passed the Senate Agricultural Committee unanimously two weeks ago (thank you members of the Ag Committee!). This bill is a crucial step toward protecting the dogs of Pennsylvania.
Please email (or call) the below legislators and ask them to to support H.B. 39 and move it to the Senate floor. Important to note, Senator Greenleaf represents Montgomery County. MLAR covers Montgomery County and many of us live in Montgomery County (I know I do) so let your voices be heard!

SAGO PALM: THIS PLANT WILL KILL YOUR PETS!
|
Sign the Petiton for Customer Warnings on Sago Plants!

Sago Plants are highly poisonous to animals as well a humans. Many pet owners have suffered losses because their pet chewed on this plant and they had no idea that the Sago Palm is poisonous! The retailer does not have to add any warning sign to the plant at all! Even though this is a extremly dangerous plant. Your kids could even die from it!
The Sago Plant contains the chemical Cyancide. If this chemical will not kill you, it will leave liver damage or even neurological damage.
Please help protecting our pets,
Lets at least require retailers to label these palms as potentially dangerous if ingested! The only reason they have not done that yet is because they want to make money out of these plant, since they are very pretty and popular.
They do not care about the animals, all they care about is their profit.
Please help and fight for the new labeling requirement by signing this petition!
